Since many people suggested a place on this website for discussion and feedback, three blogs were created, but the free blog host disappeared. Now we have one all-purpose blog. Please feel free to use it to help further the discussion of any of the issues that are so important to so many people. Use it for discussing everything and anything about our lives at Loyola, in New Orleans, away from New Orleans, whether to leave or to stay — anything you feel like sharing with the rest of us. While it is certainly possible that statements about other people may legitimately become a part of these discussions, keep in mind that remarks that are simply mean or cruel will be deleted.
I have no particular preference here, but there are some serious questions behind that rather inelegantly worded post. Fr. Carter is without question a fine man, principled and courageous. But the duties of a dean involve a great deal of attention to administrative, budget, and program detail, adn a lot of burning of midnight oil. Fr. Carter has not been immersed at that level of detail, or of required energy, for decades. Unless he is able to get an associatge dean who is a budget and organizational whiz, it could be a real challenge. I don't think many people realize how many long hours Scully puts in just to keep up with the workload.

So many things to say to 1:13am post.
On Carter's age. It's a number. He's in excellent shape as I see him walking or biking almost every day. Comparitively, although he's only a few years older than the Interim Dean for Life of the College of Societal Knowledge, he is very obviously in much better health. And, unlike the appointed Interim Dean who no one would vote for, he's spent a lifetime taking care of himself and others. And it shows on his face.

Twilight Zone,
To continue your logic following the illogic: Once those programs are eliminated, the adminstration farms them out to departments in second rate or third rate colleges.
Can you imagine Loyola's next SACS re-accreditation review? It will be another stellar example held up before other universities and colleges within the Southern Association FOR WHAT NOT TO DO.

Since Fr. Carter helped write our Faculty Handbook, he knows what is in it. We trust him. He is a good, honest man. Fr. Carter received the majority of the votes, one-third more votes than McCay and a few more than Calzada. There is the answer to your oh-so-nasty comments. We need wisdom and experience. He has those things in spades. It's too bad he wasn't interim instead of Byron but the fact that he is willing to serve now is significant. Do you think he would have agreed to accept the nomination if he did not recognize the fact that we are in dire straits?
Whoever you are, you do not speak for our college so please keep your maliciousness to yourself.

Slimeball.

Just saw the huns interim dean results. I have no major problem with Calzada or McCay but is no one else concerned that Carter hasn't attended a college assembly meeting in years, was so hopeless as president that when Knoth left they went out of college and found Byron instead of bring Carter back as interim AND he's so old that, if appointed, he might not even make it through the 2 years? Not to mention that, as a fellow Jesuit, Carter will probably jump into bed with Wildes ASAP. Whose bright idea was THAT nomination?

The logic would appear to follow the illogic: eliminate all of our best and/or most well-known programs and/or essential-to-the-community majors/departments.

Another Oldtimer:
Don't forget that Father Si Hendry used to teach a few courses in Religious Studies, too. And he was asked to leave.
And Religious Studies was on the elimination list (along with Math and Classic Studies) but was, at the last moment, retained.
Imagine a Jesuit liberal arts university without Religious Studies. Too mind boggling.
Posted by: Young timer | April 01, 2007 at 04:33 PM
Et tu,
That Religious Studies problem is pretty indicative of the situation. Think about it: they've lost Earl Richard to retirement, Tom Smith to another job, Grant Kaplan to another job, and from what I hear, no replacements forthcoming. And now Steve Duffy has passed away (a great man; may he rest in peace). So you've got a department in a Jesuit university with nobody in New Testament, nobody in early Christian history, and two fewer people in Catholic theology. That used to be one of our truly admirable departments, and now look at it. Just sad.

The Seer of Watermelon's comment is not without merit. Like a watermelon, Synergistic Walter is seedy to the core.

March 31, 2007 at 07:46 AM : What??!
I'm sorry but Norman's image really is very amusing.
Your rather bizarre and unimaginative comment on the other hand reveals your own adherence to a tired old racist stereotype more than anything else.
Posted by: | March 31, 2007 at 08:53 AM
Are you suggesting watermelon for dessert or just trying to discredit earlier criticisms by implying some sort of racism in previous comments? Based on similarities and parallels in their behavior, Gonzales and Wildes seem to ascribe to a similar ethical code. Harris can fit right in there, too. It is their deeds and disingenuous remarks that cause criticism, not the color of their skin.
You, sir or madam, have made a racist comment with your watermelon remark. If you choose to miss the point, that is up to you. But others certainly recognize valid criticism.

Oh this "hefty chorizo" is hilarious! Great idea: let's find a black guy who resembles Harris and say they each look like a "hefty watermelon." What classic wit!

Mark your calendars for a show of solidarity between students and faculty.
Come to the EAT-IN ( New Orleans' own version of the sit-in, teach-in, love-in, die-in...).
Tuesday, April 17, noon- , in front of Marquette Hall.
Maybe we can find a budget somewhere to buy chorizos to share? Otherwise, it will be a "bring your own" affair.

wait a minute.
Somebody's seen Hefty Chorizo jogging in the park?
I've seen him in the gym at lunchtime, several times.
Faculty have reported seeing him in the gym at other times. On the same days I've seen him in the gym at lunchtime.
A staff member reports that he goes to an off-campus gym for boxing.
No wonder he can't read the URTC reports. The poor baby doesn't have time to do his work, does he?

I've heard that the "hefty chorizo" has been seen "jogging" in the park some mornings. And, although I haven't seen him, I've heard he gets heftier all the time.

Norman,
"a hefty chorizo..."
You really are hilarious!
If I knew who you were I'd buy you a beer for all the laughs!

Ex-Aide Rejects Gonzales Stand Over Dismissals
WASHINGTON, March 29 — The former chief of staff to Alberto R. Gonzales testified on Thursday that he had consulted regularly with the attorney general about dismissing United States attorneys, disputing Mr. Gonzales’s public account of his role as very limited. The former aide, D. Kyle Sampson, who resigned two weeks ago, told the Senate Judiciary Committee that Mr. Gonzales’s statements about the prosecutors’ dismissals were inaccurate and that the attorney general had been repeatedly advised of the planning for them.

I will accept that answer as thoughtful and complete. However, the key says "The Rev. Kevin Wm. WIldes, SJ."
